Marie Veyron: Mastering Ostrich Leather with NILAU

At the heart of the Plaine de la Bièvre in Isère, Marie Veyron carries forward a five-generation family tradition while reinventing it. The daughter of ostrich breeders, she founded NILAU, a luxury brand specializing in bags and objectscrafted from a rare and noble material: ostrich leather. With a sustainable and innovative approach, Marie positions her work at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and the contemporary luxury market.
From Breeding to Luxury Leather Creation
In 1996, Marie Veyron’s father took a bold step by transforming the family farm to specialize in ostrich breeding, a rare practice in France at the time. Initially focused on meat production, the activity evolved under Marie’s vision, who recognized ostrich leather as a unique opportunity to highlight an exceptional material while respecting local production cycles.
Marie chose to give new life to the hides of ostriches slaughtered for meat, creating a sustainable and fully traceable product. Each hide is processed in a workshop near the family farm, minimizing environmental impact and supporting local employment.

A Precious and Sustainable Leather
The ostrich leather, recognizable by its characteristic quill bumps (marks left by the feathers), is prized for its elasticity, exceptional durability, and ability to age without cracking. It is ideal for luxury products such as bags, as well as for high-end furniture and decor.
Marie Veyron champions a zero-waste approach, using the entire hide and combining the smooth and quilled sections for unique creations. This method reduces waste while maximizing the value of every inch of this precious material.

Highly Demanding Craftsmanship
The production of ostrich leather relies on a delicate, artisanal tanning process. The entire transformation, from slaughter to finished leather, takes 2 to 3 months. After a wet tanning process known as the “blue phase,” essential for ensuring the leather’s flexibility and stability, the skins are dyed in a palette of 11 natural colors, ranging from elegant black to refined burgundy, including custom shades.
Each step of the process is designed to preserve biodiversity and comply with strict environmental standards, while meeting the aesthetic and durability expectations of a discerning clientele.
