William Guillon is an artist, sculptor and art director. Combining artisanal craftsmanship with an extraordinary imaginative force, this creative mind has forged a recognisable visual language and a coherent universe in which each piece plays a role, like a character from a science-fiction myth. Artists with such a strong identity are rare. It is therefore easy to embrace or reject his world. But once appreciated, it proves endlessly compelling. William Guillon is the kind of artist who can provoke a true collector’s obsession. So take note: either surrender to it, or run while you still can.

An Outsider in the Creative Landscape

Despite years at the helm of his studio, a presence in galleries around the world, and acclaimed appearances at some of the most prestigious professional gatherings, William Guillon remains haunted by a persistent impostor syndrome. He learned everything in the field, developed his own techniques, and conquered markets without following the traditional path of a craft school education. As a result, at major fine craft fairs, he feels like an unidentifiable outsider.

Deeply interested in contemporary artistic and craft creation, William admires technical feats and the virtuosity of craftsmanship. In the work of artists and artisans, he recognizes a remarkable ability to surpass themselves, to push their research on materials and modes of creative expression to the extreme, to go further than their masters and peers. Yet these works are rarely imbued with genuine emotional intensity.

This stands in stark contrast to William’s creative universe. When designing his pieces, his primary aim is to create an impact — to spark emotion, to convey a feeling or a perspective on the world. Aware of his distinct position within the craft scene, he does not hesitate to exhibit at such gatherings, while maintaining a discreet, independent presence on the sidelines.

His ego does not reside in his technical skill. As a self-taught artist, he gladly listens to professional advice, knowing he does much in his own way. His method of working wax for moulds can be somewhat haphazard, his gestures imperfect, yet he invests them with heart and feeling. As a result, his universe resonates.

Sources

William Guillon draws inspiration from cinema, architecture and installations. He is searching for a sensation. Music contributes, as does the slender silhouette of a church. For fifteen years, the artist has passed at least twice a day before the vast Saint-André Cathedral in Bordeaux. The majestic building never ceases to move him. He observes its details, always finding an element that had escaped his eye. He traces the directions of the vaults, the lines stretching towards the sky, and admires the gargoyles.

In films, he is drawn to close-ups of textures and landscapes. He also delights in the misty lighting of contemporary installations and has a passion for album covers. He would never copy their imagery, but he absorbs their energy and intention, which resonate with his imagination and work.

At the beginning of his artistic journey, the universe of Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger had a powerful impact on him. He was drawn to organic forms, neon lights and science fiction. Above all, he loved the idea of sharing a universe with others, of identifying with an imaginary world and bringing together people who share the same tastes. At the time, it was a niche phenomenon. In a sense, the Swiss artist showed him the way. Other influences came from films, music and books. He developed an obsession with Brutalism and Art Nouveau. In fashion, he felt close to designers such as Rick Owens and Yohji Yamamoto, whose dark, organic forms he admired. Finding nothing similar in functional design, he decided to bring his own vision into that field.

The Energy of the Works

William Guillon’s works are always elongated, reaching upwards. The artist abhors softness. He hollows, stretches and creates tension. One has the impression that the material, under strain, could shatter. He likes to say his creations are entirely stripped of fat.

These skeletal, twisted lines are partly inspired by his mother’s hands. Since the age of nineteen, she has lived with rheumatoid arthritis, which continually deforms her joints, with remarkable resilience and courage. This transformation has haunted William since childhood. He sees her hands whenever he draws. More broadly, joints are ever-present in his work.

One might expect dark, dramatic undertones from this compassion for his mother’s pain. Instead, William draws from her strength, her thirst for light and joy despite the constant inflammation. She raised three children while working tirelessly, never indulging in self-pity. This pain transformed into a smile, this suffering expressed as an affirmation of life, deeply influences William’s imagination and gives his bronze creations a positive emotional charge.

The Journey

It all began in his grandfather’s garage. A former Air Force navigator and a true jack-of-all-trades, he introduced William to working with metal. His uncle, who built steel-frame workshops, offered the young creator an exciting playground within his own studio. William used leftover metal scraps to shape his first pieces and to understand the material through practice.

He was drawn to heavy, substantial elements — nuts and rivets — assembling them into organic forms. He began with bookends; lamps and pedestal tables soon followed, quickly finding buyers among family and friends. This is how he was initiated into metalwork, discovering a deep and lasting passion for the material.

At sixteen, William Guillon embarked on active creation. He began drawing, making sculptures and collages. They filled his bedroom. In a single day, he became an artist, and it never stopped. Art and fashion particularly fascinated him. These two passions led him to study art direction and graphic design in Bordeaux.

In his fourth year, he discovered the studio of Marine Breynaert. This collaboration taught him a great deal, especially about client expectations and distribution networks, both essential to an artist’s longevity.

William Guillon is fearless. Diploma in hand, he set up his own studio without hesitation. Success did not come immediately, yet he persisted. To make ends meet, he took on odd jobs, which often helped him move forward with his artistic project. One of these temporary positions led him to the Cyclopes foundry near Bordeaux. He left with wax that opened a new creative perspective: sculpting pieces from his imagination and casting them in bronze. From the outset, his talent won the support of galleries. His first sculpted bronze creations were pre-ordered by Galerie PHILIA. Trusting the young creator, galleries bought pieces from drawings, allowing him to embark on the adventure that has since become his studio’s signature.

A Beloved Material

William Guillon works mainly with white and gilded bronze. Here again, he grants himself the freedom to take risks: white bronze is extremely difficult to handle. It welds poorly and can break. The artist loves the effect it produces and has learned to master it over time.

The first bronze collection he developed was destined for the hotel Yndo in Bordeaux. The project was complex and time-consuming. Since then, with the unwavering support of the hotel’s owner, he has produced several pieces for the establishment. This prestigious collaboration launched his career.

Creative Process

William Guillon began his professional life in the midst of the subprime crisis. The capitalist model was once again in turmoil, and the media painted a bleak picture of the future. This atmosphere influenced his reflections on the aesthetics of the era and the traces it would leave for future generations. He called it the “aesthetics of crisis”. Every major period can be recognised by its style: one only needs to think of the distinct currents of the 1930s, 1950s or 1970s.

Rejecting the concept of collections, he speaks instead of “mythologies”. His pieces have strong personalities. They are characters in the stories he tells.

His creative process always begins with writing. He composes stories that give birth to pieces with their own universe. He imagines them as members of a particular imaginary family. He invents the rules—sometimes even physical ones—that govern their existence. In the Désenchantés family, for instance, every piece plays with gravity, its tips turned downward.

Music has a major influence on his work. It is omnipresent in his life: enveloping, recharging, inspiring him. Surprisingly, a techno night can be the best place for a flood of ideas. Suddenly, in the midst of the noise, everything becomes clear. Anxiety and doubt give way to creation.

Unlike many artists, William does not draw constantly. He thinks, imagines and builds images in his mind. His brain never stops: ideas come while driving or sitting on a train. It is when he does nothing that his mind sculpts new forms. At a certain point, he feels the idea is sufficiently developed. Only then does he take his sketchbook and begin to draw. He knows exactly where he is going. For one mythology, he may produce forty-five sketches, not two hundred thousand. This was the case for the LV 426 collection, one of his most widely distributed bodies of work.

He also draws for pleasure. From these intuitive sketches emerge forms that surprise him and seem interesting enough to explore as functional objects. With practice, his style has asserted itself, and he no longer draws entirely at random. Yet sometimes the outlines appear from nowhere, like a revelation. William Guillon’s imagination is abundant, and his creations always provoke a strong emotional response, whether positive or negative. Indifference is rare.

Transmission

William Guillon sometimes wonders how people a century from now will perceive his work. Some connoisseurs say his bronze pieces carry a taste of the end of the world. He finds this quite accurate, as his creations bear witness to a certain unease and resilience. Above all, however, they express hope. They possess an inner strength that allows them to endure, to stretch towards the light. There is neither defeat nor sadness in the objects he creates. One could say that his work breathes confidence in the future.

Thinking about that future, the artist is expanding his studio and surrounding himself with talent. His team now counts six people with complementary skills and shared energy, united to respond to numerous commissions and conceive new pieces, always driven by innovation and storytelling.

William Guillon remains conscious of his self-taught path. Despite success and recognition, he still struggles with impostor syndrome. The feeling intensifies when he receives apprentices or visits from seasoned craftsmen, far more technically knowledgeable than he is.

Fashion

William Guillon has a deep passion for fashion. He is fascinated by its ability to occupy—almost invade—so many areas of human life. Fashion touches countless aspects of our daily existence. Today’s creative director is a true visionary, a conductor who must think not only about design, but also about video, shows and many other facets of the business. William loves this tentacular quality. It is like an architect designing a house down to the smallest detail, even the cutlery.

Fashion differs greatly from architecture or design: it moves far faster. Yet perhaps, in this hyper-productivity, it has lost some of its quality. William hopes fashion will slow down, and that we might once again create less, but better. To take part in it is his dream. We are certain it will come true, offering him another opportunity to leave his creative mark.

Lucile Vilaine — In Praise of the Feather, Close to Nature

I first met Lucile Vilaine at Rendez-vous de la Matière, where she was presenting her work for the very first time. Her stand revealed a highly personal universe: samples of pieces combining two complementary disciplines — featherwork and embroidery — handled with quiet confidence and restraint.

Ethical choices sit at the very core of Lucile’s artistic practice. She works exclusively with natural materials, produces her own plant-based dyes, and recycles feathers from wild birds sourced through regulated hunting in her native Sologne.

I have had the opportunity to meet — and interview for Crafted Dreams — several established feather artists over the years. Moved by the refinement of Lucile Vilaine’s work and the coherence of her eco-conscious approach, I wanted to understand more. What follows is the result of our conversation — a portrait of a young artist whose future already feels distinctly promising.

In Search of a Calling

Lucile’s relationship with embroidery began during an internship at the renowned Maison Lesage. The encounter was immediate. At the time, she was still exploring her place within the applied arts, but this experience tipped the balance decisively towards embroidery.

She went on to complete a two-year programme at the school in Nogent-sur-Marne, where she acquired a rigorous foundation in embroidery techniques and craftsmanship.

In her second year, Lucile undertook an internship at Maison Lemarié, now part of the Chanel group. It was within these historic ateliers that she discovered featherwork — and fell in love with the material to the point of committing her creative future to it.

The Pursuit of Excellence

Lucile continued her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris, better known as Olivier de Serres, specializing in textile design. There, she further deepened her work with natural materials, feathers in particular.

Upon graduating, she entered professional life through a freelance position at the prestigious Lebuisson embroidery ateliers.

The COVID pandemic and subsequent lockdowns brought her back to Sologne. With mobility restricted, Lucile returned to feathers with renewed focus and gradually redirected her practice towards interior pieces rather than traditional garment work.

The Bucolic Charm of Sologne

Lucile lives in Sologne, where hunting has long been part of her family’s history. Feathers were part of her childhood landscape. While hunters preserve the meat, feathers are usually discarded. Lucile immediately recognised the value of what was being wasted.

As feather collection is seasonal — from September to late January — she personally gathers the finest feathers from legally hunted birds.

The biodiversity of the Sologne region offers her a remarkable range of species: American, English, venerable and obscure pheasants, alongside mallard (male and female) and red partridge.

Through this process, Lucile participates in the revalorisation of a material otherwise destined for destruction, selecting only those feathers suited to her artistic work.

In Respect of Nature

Lucile founded her studio in 2019. She works exclusively with natural materials such as wool, linen, cotton and silk. For her paper-based pieces, she selects handmade blotting paper whose neutral pH preserves the integrity of the feather.

She also creates her own dyes using flowers, bark and leaves, achieving subtle, organic tones.

By managing her own feather collection, Lucile contributes — on her scale — to the preservation of a fragile natural heritage. Feathers from hunting are rarely recycled. The process is painstaking and time-consuming, and only a fraction of the collected feathers meet the structural and aesthetic criteria required for her work. The remainder, regrettably, must be discarded.

Lucile refuses to transform the feather by cutting or colouring it. Unlike many feather artists, she does not curl, flatten or reshape it. She allows nature to speak — through colour, structure and the minute variations that make each feather unmistakably unique.

In her featherwork pieces, only the tip of the feather is glued to the paper, preserving both lightness and movement.. The works are then framed under glass.

Techniques and Artistic Signature

Lucile combines embroidery and featherwork, using embroidery to secure feathers in a durable and discreet manner. Without ever compromising the feather’s natural beauty, she seeks to reveal its silhouette, its hidden sections and its subtle tonal variations.

Transparent textiles introduce plays of light that accentuate the feather’s structure. Each work is created using feathers from a single bird species, allowing their natural diversity to emerge.

Her compositions — floral or graphic — are airy and restrained, with space left around each feather so that it may exist on its own terms.

Lucile’s creations explore transparency and light through lightweight supports — sheer fabrics, textiles or papers used for lighting — where feather silhouettes appear almost like shadow plays.

True to her philosophy, she never cuts the feather, preserving its original integrity and quiet strength.

What About the Future?

Today, Lucile Vilaine’s works adorn hotel rooms, private interiors and restaurant walls, creating poetic links between décor and the natural world.

Her recent explorations point towards the development of embroidered textile collections incorporating feathers or other decorative elements — conceived as a material palette for artists and interior designers.

Working primarily in small formats for now, Lucile dreams of more ambitious projects. In the meantime, she continues to refine her techniques, assert her visual language and grow her clientele. Her participation in Rendez-vous de la Matière has already drawn strong interest from professionals.

The material she champions, combined with a singular technique and a deeply respectful relationship with nature, opens new possibilities for our interiors — and offers a delicate, thoughtful celebration of the living world.

Laura Demichelis – Bronze Artist, Craftswoman, Innovator

From a very young age, Laura Demichelis knew her path would be shaped by craft and creation. Drawn irresistibly to metal—especially bronze and brass—she made them the foundation of her artistic language. What follows is the story of a journey defined by learning, refinement, and discovery.

A Love Affair with Bronze at École Boulle

After completing her secondary studies, Laura joined the renowned École Boulle to train as a bronze turner. Her first visit to the school proved transformative. Standing in the turning workshop—surrounded by monumental machines capable of producing objects of striking finesse—she felt a decisive pull: she wanted to master this demanding craft to create work of exceptional quality.

Over three immersive years, she earned a Brevet des Métiers d’Art in bronze turning while also exploring complementary disciplines such as bronze mounting and chasing. These skills formed a solid foundation for her future. At École Boulle, teaching is rooted in a close bond between master and student, allowing for an intimate and rigorous transmission of technique. The mix of profiles in the workshop—from teenagers to post-graduates—enriched the dynamic even further.

She also discovered that the workshop was a place of genuine gender equality. Precision, patience, and respect for the material transcended any difference; passion was the only measure that mattered.

An Immersion into the World of Luxury

Upon leaving school, Laura joined the workshop of Hervé Van der Straeten, a house celebrated for its excellence in contemporary design and luxury. The experience proved formative. Under Hervé’s uncompromising eye, every piece had to reach absolute perfection—even if it meant starting over again and again.

While her primary focus remained bronze and brass turning, she also learned to assemble pieces that combined wood, lacquer, leather, and parchment. She developed a profound respect for the nature of each material, weaving them together with precision. This period—marked by a strong sense of mutual support among colleagues—became both a practical education and a defining chapter in her artistic maturity.

A Transformative Journey Through Asia

In 2013, Laura paused her career to spend a year travelling across Asia with her partner, also a bronze turner. Crossing nine countries, starting in Hong Kong, the journey became a search for inspiration and a window into diverse artisanal traditions.

A pivotal three-month stay in Vietnam allowed them to work in a foundry specialising in hammered brass sculptures and wall panels. The working conditions—open-air casting, flip-flops, constant improvisation—were worlds apart from France. Laura was fascinated by the freedom, spontaneity, and sheer pragmatism that defined the workshop. The experience stripped away many of the conventions she had internalised and encouraged her to trust a more intuitive approach.

A Berlin Chapter with Stefan Leo

After returning from Asia, Laura met designer Stefan Leo at the Maison et Objet fair. Captivated by his work, she and her partner proposed to refine the craftsmanship behind his pieces, leading them to relocate to Berlin. The collaboration expanded Laura’s artistic vocabulary: she worked with shagreen, leather, and parchment, combining them with brass to create contemporary, hybrid pieces. These intense years broadened her skill set and sharpened her artistic vision.

Back to France: The Birth of Her Own Atelier

In 2016, Laura moved to Toulouse to establish her own studio, dedicating herself to creating lighting and furniture in bronze, brass, and copper. Her Rhino table, a sculptural work of great character, entered the Mobilier National collection in 2023.

Specialising in lighting, she brings together artisanal mastery and a distinctive aesthetic. Metal and light—through their interplay of texture and reflection—offer her a limitless field of exploration. The presence of a nearby art foundry allows her to develop complex pieces under optimal conditions.

Bespoke Collaborations with Interior Designers

Laura now collaborates exclusively with professionals—architects and interior designers. A standout partnership is her work with Laura Gonzalez, with whom she develops fully bespoke pieces tailored to the requirements of prestigious international projects. Each object is unique, crafted with precise attention to dimensions, finishes, and local standards.

Experimentation and a Promising Future

For the past two years, Laura has been experimenting with enamel chemistry to integrate it with bronze. Despite technical constraints—differences in expansion, difficult adhesion—she has achieved promising results. Enamel not only enhances bronze but also protects it, making it suitable for outdoor use.

With her bold vision and tireless curiosity, Laura Demichelis continues to push the boundaries of fine metalwork. Balancing tradition with innovation, she elevates every piece she creates through expertise, sensitivity, and a deep respect for her materials.

Ryo Hikosaka. From Tokyo to Paris: Metal as Language, Patina as Artistic Identity

Japanese artist Ryo Hikosaka has made patina the defining language of his artistic expression. Combining his mastery of metalworking techniques, he transforms copper and brass into sensitive, expressive works, reflecting his dual Japanese and French cultural heritage.

Hikosaka embodies a contemporary movement that blurs the line between art and craftsmanship, placing technical excellence at the heart of artistic creation.

From Tokyo University of the Arts to École Boulle

Ryo Hikosaka began his studies at Tokyo University of the Arts, learning dinanderie, ironwork, and other metalworking techniques.

A student exchange at Paris’s École Boulle reshaped his trajectory: he encountered a teaching approach strikingly different from Japan. To his surprise, repoussé was little practiced in France. Under the attentive guidance of French masters, he perfected chiselling and ornamental engraving—techniques he continues to use to finish his pieces today.

The contrast between these two educational systems left a lasting mark. In Japan, learning is broad and exploratory; in France, it is highly specialized, with each craft separated. This focus allowed him to push his work with patinas further, gaining a structured, methodical skill set alongside the more intuitive Japanese approach.

Tokyo University of the Arts, with its famously rigorous entrance exam, provided him with a solid artistic and technical foundation. The curriculum exposes students to a wide range of crafts before they specialize, encouraging freedom of choice. Its demanding focus on Western academic drawing gave him a remarkable grasp of graphic skills, which he later combines with French patinas and Japanese painting techniques.

Choosing Copperwork: a Story of Family Heritage

Early in his university studies, Hikosaka had not yet considered a profession. Yet copperwork revealed itself almost instinctively: after a practical exercise, the smell of metal on his hands reminded him of his father, a coppersmith.

This memory guided his decision. He followed in his father’s footsteps—not under pressure, but with a quiet pride in continuing the family tradition.

Conquering France

After an initial stay in Paris, Hikosaka returned to complete his master’s in Japan. Despite prestigious job offers, he chose France, where he felt the artist’s status was more rewarding, even though his early days were challenging.

To support himself, he took on renovation work and spent his free time visiting Parisian art schools with his portfolio. There, he met sculptor Hervé Wahlen, who welcomed him into his workshop.

At Wahlen’s studio, Hikosaka refined his patina techniques, produced his first works, and exhibited his creations. One piece caught the attention of Steaven Richard, who hired him as a patina specialist.

At that time, Richard’s atelier had no dedicated expert. Through client commissions, Hikosaka experimented, honed his color and texture techniques, and developed the signature style he is known for today.

Ryo spent five years there before founding his own studio.

Finding His Artistic Language

Ryo Hikosaka operates on the boundary between artisan and artist. The artisan demonstrates technical skill; the artist expresses ideas.

His work seeks equilibrium: technique serves the concept, while concept enriches technique. Today, he produces personal creations—metal paintings, lighting, and furniture—while collaborating with luxury houses, where intricate patinas are highly sought after. This collaboration is particularly enriching, as the brands share his commitment to heritage crafts and excellence.

Copper and brass remain his materials of choice, prized for the nuanced oxidations they produce.

Sharing, Teaching, and Cross-Cultural Dialogue

Unlike some masters who guard their secrets, Hikosaka openly shares his knowledge with those he trains.

For him, technique is an alphabet: each student learns it, then develops their own language.

His work evolves between two worlds: Western abstraction and Japanese figuration. This dual perspective enriches his expression, giving his pieces subtle Japanese inflections within designs that are often Western in style.

Art, Commissions, and Recognition

His practice now revolves around three main avenues:
— personal creations,
— collaborations with other ateliers,
— commissions for luxury houses such as Cartier and Tiffany.

Professional fairs—including Révélations and Rendez-vous de la Matière—allow him to exhibit, connect with audiences, engage with peers, and generate new commissions.

His presence at major Paris craft fairs has opened doors to influential figures in the design world, including architects working on large-scale, high-profile projects.

These encounters continue to shape his trajectory. As Hikosaka refines his techniques and deepens his command of metal, he pushes his practice forward—guided by a constant dialogue between material mastery and artistic imagination.

Aurélia Westray is a French visual artist whose practice unfolds through the creative potential of felt. Her encounter with this material—long dismissed as “poor” or outdated—ignited the artistic force she had been searching for since her student years. The discovery was immediate, almost intuitive: a perfect alignment between an artistic quest and the expressive possibilities of a natural fibre. Since then, Aurélia has explored every nuance of felt, pushing its limits and composing singular works instantly recognizable by their modernity. A portrait of an artist—and a tribute to a material that has never felt more relevant.

An Ancestral Fibre, a Contemporary Vision

At the dawn of civilisation, felt was among the very first hand-made textiles created by humans. Without any tools, it offered warmth, protection, and accompanied the earliest forms of settlement.

Despite this foundational role, felt gradually lost its prestige in contemporary interiors, much like wool itself. The objects displayed at artisan markets certainly didn’t help to restore its reputation.

Yet its thermal and acoustic properties made it indispensable in industry: automobiles, construction, shock absorption, even the brake pads of the TGV.

And despite its outdated image, felt aligns perfectly with today’s priorities: natural materials, low environmental impact, thermal and acoustic insulation, breathability. It’s easy to forget that wool fibres are alive, water-repellent, resilient, and far more sophisticated than they appear.

When Felt Becomes Revelation

Aurélia Westray is one of the staunchest advocates of this noble material. Through experimentation, she brings felt back into contemporary visibility.

As a student in applied arts, she was already drawn to textiles. Her first job in prêt-à-porter led her toward millinery. During an internship on felted wool, she experienced a genuine artistic shock: the fibre became a pictorial tool. A revelation that changed her trajectory entirely.

Though felt can be learned autodidactically, Aurélia chose to train with the very best. In Aubusson, in the Creuse region—historic heartland of French felt—master felters continue to preserve a rare expertise.

There, Aurélia met an exceptional teacher. She absorbed her techniques, bent them, transformed them, and gradually forged her own artistic language—now her signature.

French Wool at the Service of Art

French white wool forms the foundation of all Aurélia Westray’s creations. Committed to preserving local heritage, she prioritises short supply chains and works directly with breeders.

She insists on the absence of mistreatment: shearing is part of the animals’ natural cycle, and unused wool is simply discarded. In her artworks, at least 70% of fibres are French, sourced from the Massif Central or the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. A superb, local, durable material.

For coloured fibres, Aurélia relies on New Zealand manufacturers renowned for the stability of their dyes—essential, since felt requires extensive washing.

Painting with Fibre, Sculpting with Light

Her earliest pieces were linked to clothing, but Aurélia quickly turned toward architecture and interior design. Felt became her palette for creating surfaces that are at once flat and sculptural—somewhere between painting and tapestry.

The physical relationship with the material is central: a true dialogue, a kind of physical negotiation where the fibre tests the limits of the body as much as the imagination.

Creation begins with scent and touch, continues through drawing, then through visualising the space where the work will eventually live. This phase of gestation is essential. After that come the samples, and finally the execution—dictated as much by physical capacity as by technique.

Everything is handmade, and the dimensions are limited by the artist’s physical strength: currently 1.80 × 1.50 m. Machines could produce much larger pieces, but never the effects she seeks.

Her chromatic universe stands apart from the current pastel trend: baroque, vivid, unapologetic. At Rendez-Vous de la Matière, this boldness caught the attention of architects, confirming the strength of her approach.

Aurélia’s wall pieces find their place in living rooms and bedrooms; her felt panels also serve as acoustic insulation. They combine beauty with technical performance. Today, her expertise attracts speaker manufacturers, hospitality architects, and spatial designers.

Lake Geneva, Mountain Light, and Japanese Inspirations

Aurélia Westray’s childhood was shaped by the proximity of Lake Geneva. From the heights where she lived, she observed the lake constantly shifting in colour with the light and weather. Walks along the water, immersed in nature, left a deep imprint on her imagination—one that still nurtures her search for transparency and reflections.

Now living in a mountain region, she remains deeply attuned to her surroundings: trees, streams, and colour variations of the landscape naturally find their way into her compositions.

Japanese art is another source of inspiration. Nuno Silk, for instance—even though she does not practise this technique that blends silk and wool to create a non-woven textile. In France, Laurine Malengreau is one of its leading practitioners.
Shibori (known in the West as tie-dye) also stimulates her imagination. More broadly, Aurélia seeks to blur boundaries, to make the material almost forgettable in favour of visual illusions: stone, lace, mineral textures? The references shift and intermingle to produce entirely new effects.

Another artist is key to her journey: Claudy Jongstra, whose monumental and powerful works have paved the way for felt’s recognition in museums and major private collections.

Bold Explorations and Expanding Horizons

From her earliest childhood, French designer Jeanne Vicérial has been endlessly sketching women and their clothing. Born into a family connected to the circus — the innovative Cirque Plume since the 1980s — she was fascinated from the start by costumes and their transformative power. These garments allow wearers to assume roles, express emotions, and embody characters. Circus costumes, with their daring creativity, became a primary source of inspiration for Jeanne, shaping her vision of costume design and fashion innovation.

After earning her baccalauréat, Jeanne moved to Paris to pursue a two-year professional program in costume and bespoke fashion design, at the only public school in France teaching haute couture and custom tailoring techniques. Unlike most private fashion schools, this program gave her comprehensive technical mastery of corsetry and garment construction, laying the foundation for her future work in bespoke fashion and textile design.

The training was demanding, rigorous, and profoundly technical: students were executors, not creators. Imagination had little room to flourish. Yet it was precisely this rigor that Jeanne sought. At costume school, she acquired the science of clothing, strong foundations in pattern-making, and essential craftsmanship skills.

Two years later, Jeanne joined ENSAD to focus on fashion illustration and innovative fashion design. Determined to carve her own path, Jeanne became the first in France to pursue a scientific doctorate in textiles. The Clothing Clinic allowed her to approach bespoke fashion not as collections but as a subject of scientific and textile research. Her goal: accelerate and automate certain couture processes while preserving artisan know-how, achieving in a day what once took a seamstress three months.

In the 1960s, ready-to-wear fashion overtook bespoke tailoring, standardizing bodies and garments. Jeanne sought to create a robotic sewing prototype capable of reintroducing this artisanal practice to contemporary life. Faced with a choice between joining a couture house or pursuing her doctorate — with the financial freedom a scholarship offered — Jeanne chose research, fully dedicating herself to fashion technology innovation.

At École des Mines, she developed the machine from scratch: the first scientific doctorate applied to fashion. Initially skeptical, her supervisors became intrigued by the technical dimension. Yet the pause opened unexpected horizons: sustainable fashion, circular production, and environmental responsibility. Her robotic method operates waste-free, supports local production, and sketches a new urban-centered fashion ecosystem, linking designers and clients directly.

This model revitalizes bespoke craftsmanship, precise and technologically informed. Jeanne envisions a future where custom fashion flourishes in cities, reconnecting designers with clients and restoring the sensory and personal dimension of garments.

Hervé Obligi, now recognized as one of the most talented stone carving masters of his generation, began his journey far from stone. Trained in cabinetmaking and wood sculpture, he initially focused on restoring exceptional furniture. A decisive encounter changed his path: meeting a renowned lapidary who collaborated with luxury houses such as Cartierand Van Cleef & Arpels. This unconventional master captivated him with his expertise, restoring high jewelry pieces and sculpting contemporary works.

A Mastery of Material: The Lapidary’s Journey

“It was an initiation of the eye, far beyond the manual work. My master taught me to observe, analyze, and question artistic and technical choices.” Under his guidance, Hervé learned to read the secrets of materials, to recognize the authenticity of an era or the skill of a reproduction. The learning extended beyond the workshop, into the halls of the Louvre and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, where his master introduced him to the silent language of forms and textures.

After four years of immersion, Hervé was preparing to leave for Tuscany, the cradle of lapidary art, when he met another master: Claude Durand, a renowned glyptic artist and heir to a family tradition linked to Fabergé. This new apprenticeship lasted ten years, blending artistic reflection with a relentless pursuit of technical perfection.

This training went far beyond mastering the techniques. “It was a mentorship of rare human and intellectual richness,” Hervé recalls, reflecting on the deep discussions about art, life, and materials. Through this journey, Hervé did not simply become a lapidary; he emerged as an explorer of the possibilities offered by precious and semi-precious stones.

Despite his exceptional expertise, Hervé faces a major challenge: the scarcity of commissions in his field. Rather than limiting himself to high jewelry, he has diversified his work, ranging from exceptional restorations to large-scale decorative creations.

One of his most remarkable projects is a floor inspired by Frederick II’s dining hall in Potsdam, created for a private collector. Hervé uses semi-precious stones instead of marble, blending tradition with bold innovation. “This market is elitist, but it demands a unique craftsmanship that few master today,” he explains.

As a turner–bronze artist and bronze sculptor, Pierre has built an impressive career in traditional craftsmanship, guided by a profound respect for the material and an approach defined by precision and creativity.

Devoting a Life to Craftsmanship

Pierre Salagnac is one of those fortunate individuals for whom the path of a career was clear from the start. From a young age, he was inspired by his grandfather, who passed down a love for hands-on work. It was he who instilled in Pierre and his siblings a deep passion for the applied arts, particularly the art of working with metal.

At 15, Pierre enrolled at École Boulle, a world-renowned institution for the arts and crafts. It was there that he discovered his true calling. While the school provided an environment for growth, it was his encounter with Professor Olivier Lebossé that marked a decisive turning point in his career. This master became his mentor, sharing the secrets of the trade along with the values of precision and rigor. Pierre chose to specialize as a turner, and out of the six students in his class, he was the only one to graduate—while the others, confronted with the demands of the work, abandoned the course along the way.

Today, Pierre’s eldest son is following in his father’s footsteps, learning the same craft—turning—and beginning his own journey in the family tradition.

Upon graduating, Pierre had the privilege of working under one of the finest master craftsmen of his time. It took him several years to master the art and nuances of metalwork, refining every gesture and technique. Working on prestigious projects for influential clients, he learned the value of precision, the respect for the material, and that in his craft, a client’s trust is a form of capital to be carefully preserved.

The 1980s marked the height of the bronzier craft in France, but the 1990s, shaken by the Gulf War crisis, brought a sharp decline to the profession. Yet, Pierre persevered, and following the untimely death of his mentor, he inherited the full mastery of the workshop.

« I am not a seamstress; I am a sculptor working with textiles, as others sculpt marble or clay. » This statement perfectly reflects Simone’s innovative and intuitive approach.

Through small wall pieces made for her children’s rooms, Simone rediscovered the potential of raw cotton. With no formal artistic training, she relies entirely on instinct to explore the fabric’s endless possibilities. Every fold, every curve reflects a perfect harmony between the artist and her material.

To structure her works, Simone uses hundreds of tiny, invisible pins to hold and support the folds. Produced by a specialized French manufacturer, these pins are fine yet strong enough to integrate seamlessly into the fabric without distorting it. An X-ray of her sculptures reveals a captivating “pin skeleton,” an element as mesmerizing as the artwork itself.
