Pierre Salagnac has always been captivated by metal, an exceptional craftsman blending mastery of bronze and metal sculpture. As a turner–bronze artist and bronze sculptor, Pierre has built an impressive career in traditional craftsmanship, guided by a profound respect for the material and an approach defined by precision and creativity.

Pierre Salagnac is one of those fortunate individuals for whom the path of a career was clear from the start. From a young age, he was inspired by his grandfather, who passed down a love for hands-on work. It was he who instilled in Pierre and his siblings a deep passion for the applied arts, particularly the art of working with metal.

At 15, Pierre enrolled at École Boulle, a world-renowned institution for the arts and crafts. It was there that he discovered his true calling. While the school provided an environment for growth, it was his encounter with Professor Olivier Lebossé that marked a decisive turning point in his career. This master became his mentor, sharing the secrets of the trade along with the values of precision and rigor. Pierre chose to specialize as a turner, and out of the six students in his class, he was the only one to graduate—while the others, confronted with the demands of the work, abandoned the course along the way.

Today, Pierre’s eldest son is following in his father’s footsteps, learning the same craft—turning—and beginning his own journey in the family tradition.

Upon graduating, Pierre had the privilege of working under one of the finest master craftsmen of his time. It took him several years to master the art and nuances of metalwork, refining every gesture and technique. Working on prestigious projects for influential clients, he learned the value of precision, the respect for the material, and that in his craft, a client’s trust is a form of capital to be carefully preserved.

The 1980s marked the height of the bronzier craft in France, but the 1990s, shaken by the Gulf War crisis, brought a sharp decline to the profession. Yet, Pierre persevered, and following the untimely death of his mentor, he inherited the full mastery of the workshop.

At 23, Pierre was offered the opportunity to step in as a teacher at École Boulle. This transition from artisan to professor marked a pivotal moment in his career. He had to break down and articulate gestures he had previously performed instinctively, gaining a deeper understanding of his own craft. Since then, he has devoted himself to teaching métiers d’art, focusing on guiding young artisans. He finds it far more rewarding to support their learning and professional growth than to work with older masters, often attached to habits—sometimes flawed—formed over decades.

One day, during a visit to the Botanical Garden of Bois de Vincennes, Pierre experienced a pivotal moment. He was captivated by the collection of bonsais—ancient plants meticulously shaped by hand into perfect forms. This encounter revealed a parallel with his own metalwork: a delicate fusion of art and devotion, where every gesture carries precision and care. Inspired, he began creating bronze bonsais, sculpting branches and leaves with the same meticulous attention as a marble sculptor. His modular pieces can be disassembled and restored, paying homage to the tradition of bronziers.

Pierre has a particular fondness for working with gold, seeing it as a unique way to preserve metal through the centuries. Unlike other materials that deteriorate over time, gold resists oxidation, allowing artistic creations to endure. This quality makes gold a preferred material for the conservation of artworks.

Facing public indifference, Pierre fights to preserve rare crafts. He launched the Craft Project, highlighting talented master artisans from remote regions of France. Through podcasts, he gives these artisans a platform, introducing them to younger generations. The series will be archived at the National Audiovisual Institute, safeguarding this cultural heritage.
